The Sambucus ‘Black Tower’ or Elderberry is an interesting upright, deciduous shrub with great value in smaller gardens due to its columnar nature. The slender stems carry large pinnate, incised leaves which appear green in Spring when young, maturing to a deep purple-black hue under full sun. Summer brings clusters of aromatic pink and white flowers followed by small, dark purple-red berries in Autumn.
Plant in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil and keep in full or partial sun. Tolerates the shade, but this will impact the colour of the foliage and it may not gain its signature purple-black hue.
